This is the Aegean myth of Penthesilea, the Amazon Queen with whom Achilles fell in love at the very instant of death, as he killed her in battle. The sculptor approaches this tragedy not with blood but with the calm, closed-eyed acceptance of a master, lending the work the voice of a wise storyteller. As the pale skin of the linden and the dark grain of the plane leave the two sides of the face in different plays of light, the flowing hair asks: why are we always too late to see the truth?
