Ayhan Tomak
Born in 1970 in Antakya, Ayhan Tomak graduated from Istanbul University in 1993. In 1995, he joined the IFAR PAINTING group, founded under the guidance of painter Erol Deneç. Over a professional art career spanning more than 30 years, he has produced numerous works in painting and sculpture. Tomak held his first exhibition in 1995, participating in a group show at the Istanbul University Ö.K.M. Exhibition Hall. Since then, he has presented his works in over 50 exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. His pieces are included in the collections of the Gabon Ministry of Culture Museum and the Eskişehir Wood Museum, and he collaborates with collectors around the world.
In his works, Tomak blends elements of Anatolian mythology and the Hellenistic period with his own interpretations, giving each piece the role of a storyteller. During his years in Antakya, he incorporated his knowledge and experience with trees and woodcarving into his sculptures. From the 2000s onward, wood became his primary medium.
Ayhan Tomak has been invited to participate in wood sculpture symposiums in Turkey and abroad. Since 2009, he has conducted workshops for individual and group participants, both nationally and internationally, including in the UK and Finland. Today, he continues to meet with his students in his studios in Çatalca and Sarıyer.
From the beginning of his artistic career, Tomak has worked not only in sculpture but also in painting, functional art, illustrations for newspapers and magazines, institutional collections, and one-off designs for TV and film productions. Additionally, he provides consultancy to manufacturers on production standards for tools and accessories used in woodcarving. Since 2020, he has explored metal as a material and started creating monumental sculptures. His first 6-meter-tall metal monument, “Tree of Peace”, is exhibited in the B40 Balkan Cities Park in Istanbul.
Tomak shares his knowledge with students at some of Turkey’s leading universities, including Boğaziçi University, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, and Istanbul Technical University. He is currently working on a book to document the professional insights he has gained throughout his career.
